In Turkey, celebrating a birthday is much like in other parts of the world: a gathering of family and friends, delicious food, gifts, and, of course, a birthday cake. However, there are unique elements to consider when it comes to Turkish birthday traditions. The phrase “Doğum günün kutlu olsun” is the typical way to say “Happy Birthday” in Turkish. It is usually followed by well-wishes and sometimes even poetic or lyrical expressions that wish the individual a long, prosperous life. Cakes are common, but in contrast to many Western traditions, it’s not uncommon to see a variety of Turkish sweets, such as baklava and lokum (Turkish delight), being offered at the celebrations as well. In some traditional Turkish families, birthdays might be a more understated affair compared to the more lavish celebrations seen in big cities or among younger generations. Gifts are generally presented to the birthday person, and these can range from practical items to sentimental keepsakes. In some families, especially for significant milestone birthdays, a kind of prayer or blessing may be given, asking for health, happiness, and success in the upcoming year. Like many other cultural practices in Turkey, birthdays are a fusion of modern trends and traditional touches. And while some might go all out with themes, decorations, and party games, at its core, a Turkish birthday celebration is about love, friendship, and the joy of sharing another year of life.
